How Big Is The US E-Economy?
Total US E-commerce Spending in the Month of October 2007 was $14.428 Billion comprising Non-travel (Retail) spending of $8.404 Billion and Travel spending of $6.024 Billion. Retail spending was up 21% from last year and travel was up 12% from last year. (excluding on-line auctions, and large corporate purchase)
Recession?
Online spending is at unprecedented levels and growing even while consumers are feeling the pinch from ballooning mortgages and higher gas prices. In fact online shopping may be enjoying some degree of lift from gas prices since some consumers may prefer to shop now without driving.
What is hot in on-line retail?
"The video games, consoles & accessories category posted the strongest gains in October versus last year, jumping 264 percent, as sales of Nintendo Wii and Sony PlayStation consoles and accessories, as well as popular video game Halo 3, continued to drive growth in the category. Furniture, appliances & equipment also experienced a strong month, growing 105 percent versus last year, followed by computer software (up 76 percent) and event tickets (up 43 percent). Meanwhile, apparel & accessories, one of the largest online retail categories, grew just 5 percent in October." (Comsource)
What does it all mean?
It means that internet real estate is very, very, very valuable and the stakes are practically winner take all because buyers are 5 times more likely to look at organic search engine ranked web sites than the pay per click ads sitting right besides them (Penn State) and consumers are very unlikely to look past the first page, choosing instead to search another set of keywords instead of scrolling to the next page.
What do you do about it?
The non-service e-economy in the US is over $14 Billion per month (Not Including Christmas) and internet sales are the fastest growing market segment in the nation... up 12-21% or more. It does not take a rocket scientist to see that a very large % of your advertising budget must go toward capturing front page organic search engine ranking from the big search engines.
